MAYORALTY OF CHRISTCHURCH

}IR H. HOLLAND RETURNED

A SMALL POLL

l-he election for the Mayoralty cf Christchurch held yesterday resulted in the return cf Mr H. Holland, the Labour Party's candidate, by a substantial majority over his two opponents, Mr J. J. Dougall, tho retiring Mayor, and Dr. Thacker. There were over 26,000 names on the roll, butt only 9769 votes were polled. The wetweather, no doubt, contributed largely to this result, but whatever the cause the polling was much below that- recorded at the Mayoral election last year when 16,000 votes were cast out of a total of over 25,000. During the earlier part of the day the poll clerk-; found time hanging heavy on their hands; it wns not until tho luncheon interval and the clearing of the weather later in the afternoon that business became at all brisk, and even then there was really no rush. The final figures announced shortly after 8 o'clock wero as follow:— H. Holland ... ... 4127

It is interesting to compare these figures 'with those recorded last year when the contest was also a triangular one. Last year's total.-, were as foi-

It is curious to note that in each case tho retiring Mayor seeking reelection came last.

Tho complete polling returns are as follow: —

Dr. Thacker ... J. J. Dougall Informal 2931 i'637 74 Majority for Mr Holland 1196

!ow:- — T. E. Taylor ... Dr. Thacker ... C. Allison Informal 7401 4878 3698 '20 \
