OBITUARY.

THE GRAND DUKE ALEXIS. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. PARIS, November 15. The death is announced of the Grand Duke Alexis (uncle of the Czar) at Paris, from pneumonia. Mr R. W. England, jun., of tho firm of Messrs- England Bros., architects, of this city, died somewhat suddenly on Sunday, and the announcement of his demise at the comparatively early age of 45 was received yesterday with great regret by his. many friends. Mr England was the eldest son of Mr R. W. England, timber merchant, Christchurch, and wajs born in Lyttelton. He received his education in this city and went to England to study for his degree aa an architect. Mr England started in business on his own account here about twenty-two years ago, and two or three yeara ago he took one of his younger brothers into partnership. Amongst the work done by the late Mr England was the laying out of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association's show grounds at Adding ton, including the shed accommodation and pens, the residence of the late Mr Allan McLean, in Manchester street, Messrs Dalgety and Company's buildings, Cathedral square, Ridley's" buildings, Bowron Bros.' buildings, Knox Church, Bealey avenue and Victoria street, St. Albans Methodist Church, Ashburton Presbyterian- Church, and several smaller churches. Amongst works in hand at p; -sent that ho was architect for, are the additions to the Bank of New Zealand, additions to Te Oranga Home, new buildings for the D.1.C., and the new warehouse and faotory for the Kaiapoi Woollen Company. In addition to numerous residences in and about this city, the late Mr England designed a number of North Canterbury sheep station homesteads. Mr England had not been in the best of health recently, and was suffering from a nervous breakdown. He leaves a wife and six children.
