THE YELLOW PERIL.

♦ ' CHINESE ENTERPRISE IN WELLINGTON. (sr_ctA_ to "th_ muhb.") WELLINGTON, August 8. A correspondent writing in the "New Zealand Times'' this morning, says that pemrtent rumours are in the air that the community will soon have to face another element of the presence in New Zealand of Chinese. He says:—"l am informed on the very best authority, that not content with driving out the white Fruiterer and vegetable dealer, and practically controlling the retail branches of this trade, the'almond eyed foreigners now - contemplate entering into competition with our general merchant*, and by the formation of a strong company, establishing themselves on a scale of importance not hitherto [ realised, a* wholesale dealers in j groceries and oilmen's stores. When j doe's the Government intend to seriously i take *up the question of the invasion of these aliens, and deal with them-' once and for all ?"

' A gentleman familiar with all -movement, in commercial circles here, ventures an opinion that the report referred to may have a simple explanation. An auctioneering'firm has decided to relinquish its ' fruit and produce department, and a company is to be formed to take' it over. The share list will be open to tbe public, amd it is believed that the market gardeners and fruit growers will be the chief shareholders. The market gardeners in the vicinity of Wellington, are mostly Chinese, but tha fruit growers are Europeans.
