[Res Makonnen was regarded ac the probable heir of the Emperor Menelik.] MR CHARLES SKEVINGTON. Mr Charles Skevington, a well-known farmer atWaikuku, died at his home on Thursday in his seventy-eighth year. He was a native of Bedfordshire, and arrived in Canterbury in the first voyage of the ship Zealandia, and with hit wife, who pre-deceased him a few weeks ago, and two children, they walked from Port Lyttelton to Waikuku, and pitched a tent where the, homestead of his farm now stands. At the period referred to the country was in a roadless and uncultivated state. Thanke to, hard work and good famine the estate of nearly 500 acres of arable land is one of the finest for crop production in the district. The deceased gentleman was one of the earliest members of the Northern Agricultural Association, and one of the members of the Executive Committee. -For fcome time •Mγ Skevington held the vicepresidency. Ho was a member of th« Methodist Church, and always exhibited a keen interest in the progress of the local school. The funeral took place at the Methodist cemeteiy, Woode-nd, on Saturday.
