LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL APPOINTMENTS.

THE LATEST NOMINEES. (SPECIAI, TO "THE PRESS.") GREYMOUTH, April 17. The two nominations for the Legislative Council come as a surprise to the people on the Coast, and although the papers in a half-hearted manner express satisfaction, the general feeling docs not endorse selection. Dr. Morice, whose son is married to one ot Mr tSeddon's daughters, was offered and declined the position. Mr Holmes is an old resident of HoEitika—old and ■enfeebled in health. He has for many years been a Iriend of the Premier, and was so when Mr Seddon was certainly not a wealthy man. Hβ is a painter by trade, but has bsen rather successful in mining, principally with water-raoee. Hβ has never taken any active part in public affairs, and has had no public training. During the Ballance Administratkm Ivlr Seddon tried to get him

appointed, bub 'Air Ballanc©, accepting Mr Guinness's advice, appointed the late Mr James Kerr. Mr Marshall is a small farmer, also an early resident on the Coast. He has been a packer, butcher, and a publican in his time. He has been a member oi t-hs Greymouth County Council for some years, but beyond dealing with reads and bridges has never shown any legislative ability, although he is "all there" for tracks in his district. Both nominees are slightly on the Conservative side, but can be safely relied on to vote as Mr Seddon desires.
