THE LATE HON. H. B. GRESSON.

REFERENCES AT THE CANTERBURY COLLEGE BOARD OF GOVERNORS. At the meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College yesterday, the Chairman (Mr H. R. Webb) said, before the business was proceeded with, that since their last meeting they had learned of the death of exJustice Gresson, who had been a member of tne Board from its commencement, and also one of its chairmen. They knew how ex-Justice Gressoh was respected, and! of what assistance he had been on the original Board of Governors. Since, his retirement his work had been of a quiet, unostentatious character, but many had to thank him for his benevolence. He would ask Mr Weston to propose a motion.. iur Weston said that Justice Gresson had been a man of many, parts. As an early _-_ttler he had helped very materially to buijd up tlie colony. He had been a member of many societies, and by his generosity and general character not only drew people towidrd's him. bnt set an example to all around. As a member-of the Board of Governors,, he had tak-n_an active part in its business.- as Chancellor of the Diocese, he was always ready at the Bishop's hand, and in tlie Synod he had token an active part in all that appertained to the business of the Church. As a judge of the Supreme Court, he had been righteous, yet merciful, and admini.tered the law with exceptional ability. He (the speaker) was sure there, were few, if any, wlio could reflect on him for having in any manner betrayed the trust the colony and her Majesty, the late Queen, lvii reposed in him. He himself'had had the pleasure, to some esxtent, of his society, and once had had the honour of appearing before him in the Supreme Court. Both in society and on the Bench ex-Justice Gres--on was a gentleman whose example conld only work for good, and if the younger generation could follow that example they would not only reflect credit on themselves and their friends, but al«o on the colony. He moved—That this Board do place on record its expression of regret at the decease of the Hon. Justice Gresson, 8.A., who, as a member of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College, as its second chairman, as a judge of the Supreme Court, and as a' citizen, earned during his long career the respect and affection of the people of this colony; and tliat a copy be forwarded to the representatives of ex-Justice Gresson 'a family."

The Rev. Canon Harper, who seconded the motion, said there was no necessity to add anything to Mr Weston's remarks. They had all known Justice Gresson, and fully appreciated Mr Weston's remarks. The motion was then put and carried, the members standing. It is on record that the late Hon. H. B. Gresson, on his first appointment as judge in 1857, rode overland from Nelson to Lyttelton, the distance being about 230 miles, aud the next year he rode overland to Dun edin, accompanied by the Hon. C. C. Bowen, the latter journey being then estimated at 205 miles.

The jiortrait in the Law Library of the late Mr Justice Gresson has been draped in black.
