THE CITY MAYORALTY.
MR A. E. G. RHODES CONSENTS TO STAND. Mr W. Recce having stated definitely that it would be impossible for him to occupy the position of Mayor of t'he city during the coming year, a deputation waited on Mr A. E. G. Rhodes yesterday afternoon and obtained his consent to stand for the position. The deputation consisted of Messrs W. Chrystall. C. M. Gray. H. H. Loughman, Robt. Allan. G. Humphreys, F. Waymouth, W. Harris, and R. (M. Macdonald. Mr Chrystall, who acted as spokesman, presented Mr Rhodes with a requisition signed by some hundreds of ratepayers, representing all sections of the " community, asking him to allow himself to be nommated for the position at the 1901 election, in March next. He pointed out that it had been signed by a majority of the members of the City Council, and a number of leading representative citi_*ns. He thought that there was a general wish that a man of Mr Rhodes s standing should come forward.
Mr Rhodes thanked the deputation, and said that if the citisen* as a whole wis.iea him To take the position be would be happy to place his services at their disposal.
