OBITUARY.

The wife of an old and well-known Ohoka settler, Mrs W. Doig, died on Thursday night. The deceased lady had been suffering for a long time from chronic bronchitis, and waa attended by Dr. Murray. She was a step-daughter of Mr J. T. Smith, ot Christchurch, and sister of Mr F. Coles, also of this city. She died at her husband's residence, Jackson's road, Ohoka. The deceased lady was well known in the district. Her family are all grown up. Mrs Wikitoria Mutti, a Maori lady of high rank among the South Island natives of the Ngaitahu tribe, died at her residence, St. Stephen's, Kaiapoi, yesterday. For some time Mrs Mutu suffered from a pulmonary complaint. She was a daughter of the chief Waireta, and full sister to Ihaia Tainui. She owned large interests in Westland reserves, particularly in the town of Greymouth, as well as at Kaiapoi, and other reserves on this side of the ranges. Her husband is Mr Teoti Peta Mutu. She leaves a grownup family. Mrs Mutu, who was of a very cheerful and liberal disposition, held a large influence among the Maori people. News of her decease was immediately telegraphed to all parts of the South Island, and it is expected that a large tangi will be held. The Church of St. Stephen's was largely assisted by the late Mrs Mutu, and it contains a handsome memorial window placed in it by her in memory of a son who was for some time tbe organist at the church.
