MOUNTAINEERING.

ASCENT OF MOUNT COOK. j Br Tkxeueaph. (fbom our cobrssfondknt.) TIMARU, December 3L ** Mesars Fyfe and Graham, who returned fromFairlie to Timaru on Saturday, have been most successful this time, having succeeded not only in surmounting Mount Took, bnt in scaling two of the three peaks. They scaled the highest and middle peak, and were part of the way up the lowest peak. They made their ascents from the Hooker side, from a bivouac 9000 feet up. After Messrs Ross, Dixon and others had returned, owing to their non-success, Messrs Fyfe and Graham were joined by Mr Clarke, and the party successfully made the ascent on the 26th. Mr Fyfe, who is very reticent as to the great success of the last, says that they were very fortunate in regard to the weather, and found the ice in splendid order, favourable circumstances that may nofcattend future expeditions. To-day Mr Fitzgerald and his party went on to Fairh>. It was understood that Messrs Fyfe and Graham would go with them, but the negotiations fell through. Much satisfaction, is felt here at Mr Fyfe being so exceedingly sncoesstuL

Mr Fitzgerald, the Alpine tourist referred to in the above telegram, left Christchurch en route for Mount Cook yesterday, accompanied by Mr Barrow and the professional guide, Matthew Znrbriggen, who were with him in his Himalayan ascent; also by Messrs A. M. Ollivier, J. J. Kinsey, and Miss Kinsey.
