MR BENJAMIN HARRIS.
Mr. Harris may be called a New Zealander. He is the eldest eon of a settler, who arrived in Wellington some forty-seven years ago. Early m life Mr Harris took to farming. Iv 1861, when the. Maori troubles were on, he relinquished the plough and drew the sword in the Otahuhu Cavalry Volunteetflj and for a few years subsequently galloped about slaying Maoris iv the interests of Settlement, civilisation and Major, and buried tbe hatchet and went lfr.for local government affaire. Not only did; he sit ib the old Auckland Provincial Council, but he haa twice previously tin 1879 and In 1&J2) had a Beat in the House of though there is no record to show that he ever particularly distinguished himself as a lawmaker. This Parliament he has so far won fame only by his proposal to abolish the cap that cheers and also inebriates from Bellamy's. From which there is reason to suppose that the retired warrior is a teetotaller. Mf Harris ia a gentleman of somewhat solid appearance, with smooth hair and a florid complexion, who looks as if farmiiig, fighting, teetotaliatti, a'ud the climate of New Zealand agreed with him.
