MR T. HARRIS OF CALNE

By Alfred Satotders. vvmtjtkn for the wbekly press. < It was in the summer of 1889, whilst I was staying in England, that I received a letter from Mr Harris asking mc to give an address in the Town Hall at Calne on behalf of the Calne Temperance Society. I did not know Mr Harris, but I liked his letter and I liked the thought of speaking in my native county, and not far from my native place, so I accepted the Invitation. When I got on to the branch line leading from Chippenham to Calne I said to a very intelligent looking fellow passenger, "Do you know Mr Harris?"

" Everyone about here knows him, be i» a great bacon carer, he keeps this railway going and employs half the people in Calne. He Mile five thousand pig* a day and cores them in the biggest ice house in England. Stakes just as good bacon in August

as be can in January. Hβ pats them on an overhead railway line before he kills them; two men do nothing else all day long bat stick pigs, and as soon as they are dead they go into a fiery furnace' that would barn them all to ashes in a minate, but they don't stop there two seconds, then hundreds of men clean them all along the line, and they never come off it till they are in che ice house to cool and salt."

" What a murderous, disgusting place it must be P

" Not a bit of it. It's the cleanest place in Calne.. All concrete floors washed every night. If you were to go there before they begin in the morning, you would not think that a pig had ever set his foot inside there."

"Poor things, they never would if they could help it."

"Stop till you see the place. It is a lucky pig that ever gets there, they don't get time to squeak. They would not get killed half so easy anywhere nor made into half each good bacon."

" I suppose all these batchers are rather a rough lot f

" You won't find a quieter lot of men in all England; they never swear, they mostly go to meeting or to church, they are nearly all teetotallers ahd they spend their evenings either in th«lr own horne 8 or in the big library which their master has built for them."

" Is it a good library f"

"The best I have ever seen. It is not full of law, or logic, or science, or sermons, or yellow backs, but books from which you can learn anything ycu want to letfrn."

"Is it managed by the master or the men?"

"Well, a little of both. Ihe master finds the money. He lets some of the best men think that they manage it, but he won't let any bad books come inside it. He is a very religious man, though very far from being a bigot. Nothing would be managed as it is long without him., .

" I suppose he is a great man in Calne ?'

"Well, he would not be a little man anywhere, there is nothing little about him. He has a big head and chest and is about six • feet high, and more than half Calne would believe anything he said. We all know that Calne would not be much without him. But he is not a proud man, he won't send a carriage or a footman to meet you, but he will come himself and he will carry that bag for you if you will let him. He must be making lots of money, but' he does not spend it in trying to look. th e great man, and that is just what makes us all believe him to be a great man."

All this I found to be true. The great pork-butcher did come himself, and did offer to carry my bag, and soon took mc to ajjouse in which I could see all those well-known proofs that he honoured God and loved hia neighbour, and afterwards to a. meeting in which any one would be heard well who had been introduced by Mr Harris. .

One feature of that meeting I must describe, because it shows the vigilant wine care that Mr Harris took that his neighbours': and employees should not be misled upon any subject by any one in* traduced by. him,, and gives the best of all reasons why "more than half Calne would believe anything he said." As we came on the platform he introduced mc to the -officers of the Temperance Society and to -several other persons, 'but there was one gentleman* who kept a chair by his side, to whom he - did not introduce mc. My address was to be on the circulation o f Mood and the effect of alcohol upon it. j launched out, as usual, against the doctors for not telling us the whole truth.about alcohol, and especially for. the cruel part they had taken with Calvin and the priests in. procuring the death of Servetue, the great man who first put us on the right track in the most importantof all physical discoveries, the circulation of the blood. When I sat down Mr Harris's unintroduced friend rose, and proposed in the kindest terms, a vote of thanks to the lecturer and, amidst much laughter, expressed his regret that doctors were only men, and not at all sure to be many centuries in advance of the particular age in which they lived. After the meeting Mr Harris told mc that the stranger to mc was the favourite doctor in Calne, And that notwithstanding what I ta&4 said against the doctors he had freely admitted to him that the lecture was all true and very instructive.

Next day I saw the "lucky pigs" being converted so quickly and so cleanly into bacon.' I saw the philanthropic butcher amongst his own men, ana the mental, not the lip, homage which he received. Ifeft the coolness of the gigantic ice house and smelt the marvellous sweetness of the summer made bacon. 1 aaw the large library, into which no .bad books were allowed to enter, and in .which every reasonable comfort and attraction was provided for the workmen. But better than all, as a proof of what Mr Harris was as a master, I saw a large body q' quick dexterous eager men, vigorously vicing with each other in the extreme rapidity of their movements and pushing through work not generally supposed to be refining, yet remarkable for their orderly obedience, their gentle demeanour, and the moral (not grammatical) purity of their language.

I see by reports of county council election meetings in Wilts, that, in December, last, thi9 noble pork butcher was addressing public meetings, as a candidate, in company with Lord Edmond Fitzmaurice, and appeared .everywhere, be receiving unanimous votes of confidence. ~
