SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last evening, in the Borough Council Chamber, at 7 o'clock. Present— Hie Worship the Mayor and all the Councillors, except Messrs Charters and Langdown. The Mayor called on the town clerk to read the attendance list for the financial year, which, showed Councillors* attendance as follows:—The Mayor, 67; White, 149; Langdown, 46 ; Andrews, 120 ; Nicholl, 31 ; Hall, 84 ; Joyoe, 31; Charters, 55 ; Pavitt, 113- Shierlaw, 30. A letter from the Ohristohuroh City Couacil was read, stating that many of the men employed breaking stones in Ohrietchoroh were Sydenham residents, and suggesting that like employment be found them in that borough. Referred to the works committee. • A letter was road from Mr Stevens, M.H.8., enclosing a copy of the Sydenham Borough Council Empowering Bill as passed. Received with thanks. Mr Whitelaw wrote asking payment of an account dne to him for ,plans. ;# . It was agreed, owing to the absence of the chairman of the fire prevention committee, to refer the same to that gentleman, and the clerk was instructed to advise Mr Whitelaw that the matter would be finally dealt with at the next meeting of the Council. A letter was received from the Chairman of the General Cemetery Board, advising the Council that the Selwyn County Council had made a grant of £106, conditional on the Road Boards and and municipalities concerned finding the sum of £200, to make up a total of £300 to form and metal the uncompleted portions of the road connecting the Canal Reserve with the Cemetery, and asking the Council to grant a ' sum of £100 or £150 for that purpose.

The works committee reported haying held a consultation, with the works committee oj the City Council r<? the South town belt, and that drawings and specifications had been wcerred from that hody, hut aa they did not aorrapond with the lerele they were referred baok for correction. They had also received a letter from Jteeas Harman and Sterem, asking the Council to construct certain streets in rural secbons w and 62 at the expense of Hon. J. Hall and

Mr Lancaster, the Council to take the same over, which the committee recommended for adoption. With regard to an application made for the Council to pay half ,eo*t of fencing and constructing a new road connecting Falsgrave street with Opawa road, as certain information asked for had not been supplied, the proposal was not recommended for adoption. On the report being considered, it was agreed that a clause should be added making the Council's assent to the proposed streets in rural sections 13 and 62, contingent on the approval of the plan when received. 'Xhe report as amended was adopted. The fortnight's receipts were £702 17s 2d. Accounts passed for payment, £156 11s 2d; credit balance at Bank, £589 5s sd. The town clerk having left the chamber, a letter was read from that gentleman asking that the question of his salary be reconsidered. Referred to the finance committee.

September 20th being the anniversary of the borough, it was agreed to give the employes of the Council a holiday on that date. This was all the business, and the Council adjourned.
