Ploughing Matches.—The time of the year for the annual ploughing matches in various districts of this province is at hand, and by our. to-day's list of advertisements we observe that a public meeting, to arrange for the ploughing match, in connection with the Mandevillo Farmers' Club, is to be held at Kaiijpoi on Friday next. ;' Found Dead. —On Saturday morning an old man, named Cooper, was found in his bed at the Mechanics' hotel apparently lifeless. Dγ Patrick was at once sent for, and on his arrival he found life to bo quite extinct. The trunk was warm, but the extremities were coll. We hear that the Very Rev. the Dean visited the deceased, who had been poorly for a short time, on the previous evening. Christchurch Fike Police.—A meeting of the newly-elected officers of the Fire Police was held at White's hotel on Saturday night last, Mr W. R. Mitchell, presiding, at which Mr J. V. Ross was unanimously elected chief officer, and Mr E. B. Bishop nominated a? Chief Fire Inspector—the appointment of the latter resting with the Mayor who, being present, kindly promised to ratify such appointment officially at the meeting of Council to be held this evening. Beet Sugar.—The movement for securing to the province this branch of local industry seems in persevering hands. The provisional committee met at the White Hart on Saturday, and again added to their, stosk of knowledge on tho subject, end Mr Tisch undertook to make some ration or household sugar from beet-root for the satisfaction of the sommifctee. (The fines and crystallized samples cannot be attempted until a suitable plant and proper skill are secured ) The Secretary stated that he shortly expected some valuable information from a gentleman in Melbourne, who is thoroughly conversant witH the various improved processes. At the suggestion of Mr Brunsden, the committee propose supplying seed to farmers who are willing to : cultivate the root. Dβ Livingstone at Zanibar—The following telegram whs received at Port Elizabeth from King William's Town—" Dr Livingstone at. Zanzibar in January, and would go to England via Red Sea and Alexandria." The " Eastern Province Herald," from which the foregoing is extracted, publishes the following in its issue of the 23rd March— ,, The ' Mail' says that there is room for doubting the accuracy of the telegram reporting the presence of Dr Livingstone at Zanzibar in January, which we published ten days ago, and which was also received by the Commodore at Simons' Town. The Belliqueuse left Zanzibar on the 27th January, and all she reports on the subject is that the Doctor was on his way to England by the interior route from the Lakes and along the valley of the Nile to Egypt."
