CHRISTCHURCH ELECTION.

The polling for the election of members for the City took place on Saturday, in the old Town Hall. Very little excitement was manifested; the three first members returned being considered certain from the first, and the real contest lay between Mr Wilson and Mr Luck for the' fourth place. Only one candidate engaged vehicles to bring members to the poll, and only in the vicinity of the Town Hall could any signs of an election be found. The arrangements made for voters were very incomplete, consisting of a single table placed in the body of the hall, one person only being' able to vote at a time. During the dinner hour the place was crowded, and we believe that a good many after waiting until near one o'clock were compelled to retire without voting. At the close of the poll also several were shut out. At five o'clock the Returning Officer (Dr. Donald) announced the following to be the state of the poll at its close. These numbers are substantially correct, although of course the declaration was not an official one :— Garrick 506 Hawkes ... 484 Williams 440 Wilson 375 Luck. ... 357 Andrews 335 Wakefield 39 The four members, and two of the unsuccessful candidates, then addressed those assembled, thanking the electors for the support they had severally received, and the meeting dispersed.
