(From our own Correspondent. ) Kow that communication with the outer world is restored, I take the opportunity of jotting a few items which may interest your readers. Your "Intelligent "Vagrant" described the Lake scenery so truthfully and beautifully that I am mute on that point. The report was highly spoken of here. The Wakatip Steam Navigation Company is now a reality, so that in a very short time we shall have a fast-going, comfortable passenger-boat plying on our waters. The Government, I hear, bas granted a subsidy of £750 a-year, for two years, to the Company, which is very encouraging. Mr L. Hotop has been appointed their legal manager. Our library — which is already one of the best on the Otago goldfields — is about to receive a further supplement of books to the extent of £40. So the Sub-Commit-tee — Revs. Jones and Ross, and Mr Neill — reported at the last Committee meeting. Emigration is the order of the day j ust now. Mr Rogers, our esteemed Captain of the Cadet corps, strikes out for Invercargill, while Mr Tait, a very much respected resident, and whose name before now has appeared in your columns, steers for Oamaru. A farewell soiree to those gentlemen was held on the 14th inst., in the Presbyterian Church vestry, when a great many of their Templar friends assembled to wish them God speed. Their self-denying efforts in more than one good cause will long be remembered. Captain Rogers, as an old volunteer, was presented with as gold-mounted meerschaum pipe, while Mr Tait, as librarian to the Sunday school, received a splendidly bound volume on the Reformation. Mr Poole, our much -respected trooper, leaves for Waitahuna on Friday. Such is life at the Lakes !
