INCH CLUTHA.

(From our own correspondent.) The Inch Clutha and Kaitangata Temper-, ance Society met in the schoolroom, on Friday, the 31st Ult. Mr Alexander Gregor, Vice-President, occupied the chair. Mr E. M'Rae, secretary, read the minutes of last meeting, which were duly adopted. A code of rules, prepared by the Committee, were subjected to the approval of the meeting, and adopted after a lengthened discussion, in which the Rev. James Kirkland, the' Chairman, M'Rae, Anderson, Ingles, M'Kiulay, Simpson, aud M'Leod took a part. The: Chairman invited all who wished to join the' Society to subscribe the roll, andi am happy, to say that six young ladies were the first to comply with the invitation . Ten of the male sex followed their example. Mr Kirkland'' expressed himself highly pleased at the increase in the number of members, and hoped that the influx of support towards such a laudable object would continue. It was suggested thafc the Committee arrange to havo fectures and sixpenny readings at intervals for the good of the Society. Judging by the preparations made by the Committee I doubt not but the sanguine hopes of ths members will be realised. A vote of thanks, which was responded to with loud applause, was proposed to the ladies who first signed the ' roll. The Chairman announced that the roll contained 43 signatures, IG of which were attached to it on tim night in question. A vote of thanks to the Chairman brought the meeting to a close. Judging from the impetus which this Society got afc its formation we may look for the best results, but it is to be hoped married ladies and heads of families will lend a helping hand. The female, '* ths better half" of the human family, can boast of philanthropists and reformers who adorned their sex and redeemed many from tro uling downward paths Shall we not then look for local patriots to pub their influence in the scale on behalf of our dearest interests, moral, pecuniary, and social ?
