DEATH OF M.L.C.

THE HON. JAMES McLEOD

KUGBY AM) RACING FIGURE

The death occurred this morning of the Hon. James McLeod, M.L.C. He had been in indifferent health for about a year. Mr. McLeod was a native of Otago, where he was born in 1882. His early activities included railways, banking, go!d mining and journalism. In 1912 ho was partner in the establishment of a printing firm, of which he was a director at the time of his death. He was widely interested in public and semi-public institutions and sport, and had intimate knowledge of local and Dominion affairs.

Mr, McLeod was twice president of the New Zealand Rugby Union and managed the All Black team which toured Australia in 1920. He was chairman of the Taranaki Rugby Union committee for 36 years. He took a large part in the negotiations with the English Rugby Union concerning Rugby rules. Mr. McLeod was president of the Taranaki Jockey Club and had been a member of the New Zealand Racing Conference executive. He was largely responsible for the introduction of the win and place system of betting which was first used in the Dominion by his club. He took a keen interest in aviation, cycling and athletics.

He had been a member of the Legislative Council since 1934. Mr. McLeod. who was twice married, is sui-vived by his wife. There is no family.
