MAYORAL ELECTION

MR. MACKY TO STAND CANDIDATURE ANNOUNCED Announcement of his intention to offer himself as a candidate for the mayoralty was made by Air. Victor Macky to-day. This decision, said Mr. Macky, was in response to representations made to him by a wide section of the public.

"The problems of housing, health and the economic stability and wellbeing of the community," said Air. Macky, "are causing grave concern to every right thinking citizen. .Much is owed to the men of the fighting forces, who, incidentally, are disfranchised in this election, and i have been made to feel that, as a returned soldier of the last war, and experienced in business and public affairs, I can serve them and the interests of my fellows in all walks of lile with impartiality and complete understanding. My decision will involve certain sacrifices as far as my personal affairs are concerned, but I am prepared, to the best of my ability, to serve the city of my birth."

Mr. Macky was born in Auckland of a pioneer family—his grandfather. the Rev. John Macky, M.A., arriving here in !Ssl. He was educated at the Bayfi«!'d School, and the Auckland Grammar School. He had a brilliant Rugby football career as wing three-quarter for the Auckland University first fifteen, and for the Auckland representative team during the years mil to 1914. He won his All Black cap in l'Jl3.

After the outbreak of the Great War Mr. Macky enlisted as a private, and served with the infantry in France. He was with the army of occupation in Germany, and returned to New Zealand with the rank of temporary captain.

Mr. Mack.v has served the community in many capacities. For six years lie lias been a "member of the Auckland Hospital Board and chairman of its finance committee. He is vice-chairman of the Auckland Grammar Schools Board, vice-presi-dent of the Y.M.C.A., and chairman of the Auckland Vocational Guidance Advisory Council.
