GENERAL ELECTION

KAXPABA Independent. Nationals—Mr. T. Clifton Webb was selected from the five nominees by a meeting of the selection committee on Saturday. Mr. Webb is of the third generation of a family of Northern Wairoa pioneers. He was born in Te Kopuru and entered the Auckland Grammar School with a junior district scholarship. He tool: up the study of law and qualified in 1910, entering practice in Dargaville three years later after gaining experience hi an Auckland law office. On returning from military service in 1919 he resumed the practice of his profession at Dargaville and took up residence in Auckland 16 years ago. In his youth Mr. Webb was a provincial Rugby representative, and has continued his close association with the game, both as a referee and an executive official. He is a former president of the Northern Wairoa Rugby Union and is a vice-president of the Auckland Rugby Union. He served a term on the Dargaville Borough Council and was also a member of the Kaipara Chamber oi Commerce. AUCKLAND WEST Independent.—Mr. John Gilchrist, of 27, Hepburn Street, City, will be an Independent, with the support of tha Real Democracy Movement. Mi'. 'Gilchrist was born in Glasgow, and, before coming to New Zealand in 1900 engaged in political activity in Scotland. He eontested Dunedin seats in Labour interest on two occasions, but without success. The Auckland West seat is ?tt present held by Mir. P. Carr (Government).
