As a sub-lieutenant he volunteered for submarine service and, after completing a special course, was sent to Malta. Gazetted lieutenant from January 1, having reached the age of 20, he temporarily served in a Polish submarine until finally appointed to the submarine which now is reported overdue, ... Lieutenant-Colonel J. M. Allen, member for Hauraki, who was killed in action in Libya last year, was a cousin of Lieutenant P. R. H. Allen. Lieutenant-Colonel J. M. Allen s father was killed in the war of 1014-18.
