OBITUARY.
MR. C. H. CLINKARD. After a long illnr>s, f lie <loatli lias occurred of Mr. Cecil If. Clinkard at the age of ro. Mr. Clinkard was the first Mayor of Rntorua and twice member of Parliament for the Rotorua electorate. For over 20 years he served, the public as a member of school committees, the road board, the county council ami smaller bodies, and was a justice of the peace of long; standing. Mr. Clinkard started work at tlie ape of 14 in kauri forests, and at the age of 18 began his own business as a timber merchant and contractor at Kaukapakapu, where for four years lie was secretary of the road board. When Rotonia was formed into a municipality in 102.'! lie was elected the first Mayor, and was also elected for a second term liv a large majority. In 1005 he contested (lie Waiteniata seat as a nominee of the Literal-Labour Federation, but was unsuccessful. By the narrow margin of .100 votes he was defeated in 10-2."> by the then sitting member of Rotorua. Mr. 1". F. Hoi-klv. However, three years later, as nominee of the United party, he defeated Mr. Hockly, and was member of Parliament for the Rotorua electorate until 1 0n.%. Mr. Clinkard is survived bv five sons.
