DELAY ENCOUNTERED.

* ONE TREE HIXL, MEMORIAL. Inquiries concerning the progress of the monument on One Tree Hill, made at the meeting last night of the Metropolitan Centennial Association, elicited jfrom Mr. I. J. Goldstine, Mayor of One Tree Hill, a statement that the matter was in the hands of the Cornwall Park trustees. Mr. Goldstine said the position as he understood it was that the progress of the monument had been held tip for a time by delay encountered in securing the bronze figure for the monument, but he believed that difficulty had now.been overcome. However, he had been told that the Maoris of the province had expressed a desire that any function commemorating the raising of the memorial should be deferred until after the war. and the trustees proposed to defer to the expressed wishes of the Maoris concerned. If that were so the function -would not become a portion of the Centennial gesture, as had been intended. but it did not necessarily mean that the memorial would remain*unfinished until that later date. The Hon. B. Martin and Mr. A. S. Bailey were deputed to approach the Cornwall Park Trustees; with a view to suggesting that a public statement be made on the subject. A suggestion that the monument should be described as a Centennial tower and not as a memorial was made by the Rev. G. I. Laurenson in an address to the Auckland Institute and Museum last evening. When provision was made by the late Sir John Logan Campbell in his will for the building 0 of the monument, lie said, it was expected that the Maori race would gradually die out and that an impressive memorial would be a most fitting svmbol to perpetuate its memory. The revival of the race had since made the name memorial inappropriate and manv Maoris objected to it.
