OBITUARY.

HON. J. TREVETHICK, M.L.C.

After a long public career, a member of the Legislative Council for the past nine years, the Hon. Jonathan Trevethick, M.L.C., has died at liis home, 2, St. .lames' Square. He was called to the Legislative Council on January 11, 1 liis appointment being regarded as a mark of recognition of his lifelong service to the Liberal cause. In the lean years of the prtv he adhered to its principles, and worked in its interests, despite every discouragement.

Mr. Trevethiek was born in Cornwall in lKt>4. and came to New Zealand in INBH. On arrival he joined his brother in business at Lower Hutt, but in 1893 he came to Auckland and established a brush manufacturing business, which he carried on until 1!>27. when his son, Mr. •(. Trevethiek, succeeded him.

Mr. Trevethiek was elected to the Auckland City Council in 1!)1(), and held a seat oil that body until 1921, when he retired. He also served as a member of the Auckland and Suburban Drainage lioard. and for 34 years right up to the time of his death he had been associated with the administration of the Auckland Sailors' Home, being president for two periods. He had also been a member of the lioard of Trustees of the Auckland Savings Hank. He had been a justice of the peace for 33 years. Mr. and Mrs. I revethick celebrated their golden wedding last year. In addition to his widow, Mr. Trevethiek is survived by one son, Mr. J. C. Trevethiek, and four daughters, Mrs. G. Wickstead (Wellington) and Mrs. F. D. Menzies, Mrs. p. Olsen and Mrs. J. Dickey (Auckland).
