GREAT BLOOD.

WINNER'S PEDIGREE. HALF-BKOTHKK TO CUDDLE. Padishah. who made history at Kiccartoii yesterday by winning the Crand National Hurdles after lieing successful in the Crand National Steeplechase on Tuesday, 1* T»y Chief Ruler from Caress. Chief Ruler has sired winners at all distance* from six furlongs to two miles, over which distance Admiral Drake and Cold Trail won the Auckland Cu|>. hut prior lo Padishah. he had never sired a jmti|K-r of note. Nor have descendants of The Tetrnrcli distinguished themselves to any great extent in this liehl. the most successful. ]ierhaps. being Tolgus in England and Sarcliedon in Australia. Hoi Herode. sire of The Tetrarch. also sired Koidore. sire of the groat 'chaser Koyal Danieli, and Menin. another son of Koi Wferode, sired Crey Friar, winner of the A.J.C. Steeples. Another representative in Annibal, winner of the American Crand National Steeplechese test year, who is bv Chubasco, a koii of Stefan the Creat and grandson of The Tetrarch. On the whole, however, the roll of great jumpers coming from this line is a meagre one. On the other side of Chief Killer's pedigree we find that his dam, .lest, is inbred to 'Hermit, the fountain-head of jumping blood, with four free generations, and that Suicide, dam of Amphion. grandsire of Jest, whs a three-quarter sister to Ascetic, one of the greatest names to be found in the annals of the Liverpool Crand National.

It is probable, however, that we must look to the dam's side of Padishah's pedigree to find whence he derived his great merit an a jiim|>er. Caress is by Martian from imported Trichas by Thrush from Creme Simon by St. Simon from Settlement by Bend Or from Solitaire (20) by Hermit, coming from the same line as Blue Peter and Pilaris. Very few of the progeny of Martian were tried over jumps, But he was sire of Martial Dawn, dam of the Crand National Hurdles and Great Northern Steeples winner Callamart. Thrush was sire of Jackdaw, who sired two winners of the Liverpool Grand Xational Steeplechase, Grakle and Kellsbro .Jack, and also Jackdaw of Rheims, one of the most successful and prolific sires of jumpers in the United Kingdom to-day. Trichas, grandam of Padishah, was a half-sister to Casetta, who was dam «f Cottage, the l>est sire of jumpers in Ireland at the present time. Cottage is sire of this year's Crand National winner Workman, and also of the higli-class steeplechasers Dunhill Castle. Brendan's Cottage, Lough Cottage and Brighter Cottage. Last year Cottage had four starters and this year three in the Grand National Steeplechase, more than any other sire represented.

Care«s <1 hin of Padisha li. was a halfsister t" the winners a-ul Flying Mist, and Padishah is a half-brother tn the great mare Cuddle, winner of the -New Zealand ('up arid the Auckland Cti|> twice, as well as the A.J.C. Donoastor Handicap, All Aged Stakes and many otlier important races.
