SOME DERBY PROSPECTS.

LONDON, April 28. A great lace for the Two Thousand Guineas, at Xcwmarkct on April 27, -was worthily won in the presence of liis Majesty b.v Mr. •'Maiina"' Morriss' J'asch, the favourite, who had- a couple of lengths to spare from Scottish Union, with Mirza 11. one and a half Jengths away, third (says Captain Heath, an English writer). JS'ext in order came Portraarnock, Unbreakable and Pound Foolish, with Sir Abe Bailey's pair, Ramtapa aud Caerloptic. and Paris 11. right on their heels. Pasell did not make the whole of (he running, but he made most of it. Gordon Richards, whose fir.st Guineas winner this was. had his colt bang in touch with the leaders, and when Richards pave the word his hoi-ric went to the front, tackled the hill like, a lion, and had a lot to ttpavc iii passing the winning post. Scottish Union wae second on merit and just for n moment coming out of the Dip I thought he was roiiir to will. 1 am convinced that he failed through lack of htness and not through lack of stamina, and J am more than ever pleased that I made him my Derby hope when compiling my list of horses to follow. Waiting plans had obviously been laid in connection with the running of Mii/.a 11., and when he began to breu«t the Hill out ot the Dip ho was shouted with some justification for a few strides. It was then, however, that the winner came out with the race won. I give Portmarnock full marks ior running on into fourth place on merit, just in front of his stable companion Unbreakable who, by the way, was the only blinkered horse iii the tieid of 18.

Lives to Fight Another Day. Portmarnock lives to light another rlay, and 1 am certain he will tight right well on Derby Day. But he will have Scottish Union to beat on June 1. The fitness of that good Dastur-sired horse Faris 11. stood him in good stead; he ran a line workmanlike race, and if the company wa« a bit too good for him I am sure he will pay his way. Just the same can be said about Ramtapa, though after a «lowish start, followed by a forward move, he never really gave me an idea that he was threatening to win.

Staminal Limitations. Mirza 11. has had his staminal limitations exposed, but he remains a t'rand horee up to six or seven furlongs. This can also be said about Caerloptic and Pound Foolish, though the latter of this pair strikes me ae one who may well (tain etamina with the passing of the months and eome sun on his back. For Derby considerations I want to recommend Scottish Union first of all, and then Portmarnock. lam sure they will justify our faith. I will not have Pasch as an Epsom proposition: his behaviour in the paddock before the race was far from immaculate, though tlie sobering influence of the contest calmed him down. I do not think Pasch will ever survive Knsom's exigencies. Scottish Union and Portmarnock will do for me for the time being for the Derby. with a saving clause for Ramtapa. who pave us a good run, but a run which was not quite good enough.
