N.Z. OUTPLAYED. BRILLIANT ENGLISHMEN. VIIE CONDITIONS AT DUWEDIIf (By Telegraph.—p r e 88 Association.) DUNEDIN, Sunday. Snow and sleet showera marred the for'th f! 8 ?'■ Carisblook ground yesterday L li l \ international Association football contest between England and New Zealand, which the former won by 12 IS* 8 tk Theie was an attendance of JOW. ihe visitors were obviously more Tvii on - th ® ground than the New Zealanders and they trapped the ball, passed and shot with precision. In spite of the conditions the EnglishZVt exhilarating exhibition of high-grade football. The New Zealand team was sadly lacking in cohesion and the forwards could not penetrate a wellt V fi v T hi< i h J °y was pivot. The New Zealanders misdirected their critical stages. In spite of having 12 goals scored against them, Cameron kept goal brilliantly for New Zealand, and received strong support against an aggressive side from Sutherland, Haggett and Gerrard. New Zealand kicked off and the visitors at once attacked a centre from Collins giving Mathews a goal two minutes after the opening. New Zealand advanced smartly on the left to the goal area" but met a sound defence. Clever combination by the visitors had New Zealand defending again, Joy clearing the bar with a strong shot and Cameron saving a powerful drive from Lewis. Nice work by Duncan and Leslie saw England's territory invaded, but the slippery ground nullified the advantage and Joy, with a shot from half-way brought Cameron out to clear. By brilliant passing England travelled the, length of the field, Cameron saving a brilliant drive from Finch. New Zealand again advanced promismgly, but found Joy invincible and the bal worked down the right wing to Collins, whose well-timed centre was headed into the goal by Thornton The visitors were now getting into their stride and attacking frequently, but they were kept out by Cameron who saved four shots brilliantly. Several likely movements by New Zealand failed through lack of combination. One exception was when Sutherland, Duncan, Wood and Leslie threaded through to give Wood a shot went outside. Just before halftime England's right wing outwitted the defence and from a smart centre by Collins Jiastham scored. The half-time score was: England ... 3 New Zealand 0 Disastrous Second Spell. Immediately on resuming a "brilliant movement by England's backs and forwards gave Finch a clear run to beat Cameron with 9 low drive. Continuing its attack Collins slipped the ball across to Eastham who scored from close range. After Thornton had lifted the ball over the bar and Mathews had brought Cameron to the ground to clear, a hard drive by Finch was crossed to Eastham who secured the visitors' sixth goal. Finch crossed to Thornton who scored England's seventh goal after the second spell had been in progress for only thirteen minutes. A welcome change was brought about by nice work by Leslie, Wood and Duncan, but Huddle cleared easily from a weak shot by Leslie. England attacked again and Cameron cleared, but Finch returned and Sutherland conceded a penalty by handling the ball. Eastham scored. New Zealand again reached the visitors' goalmouth, where a free kick was awarded to England owing to two forwards attempting to play the ball while it was held by the ,-ialie. New Zealand lost an opportunity when Sutherland placed to Wood, but Lealie
and Farnan failed, to press home the attack. A moment later Farnan, when forcing a corner, was injured in a collision with Joy and left the field. The visitors then went right through the New Zealand defence, Finch scoring. New Zealand thrice endangered England's goal from advances by Wood, which Leslie failed to finish off. Mathews scored again as a result of smart work by Finch and just before time Lewis, with a powerful lefifoot shot, and Collins, from a solo effort, added to the score.
