NINE CHINESE ARRESTED. REMANDED FOR A WEEK. Finding it impossible to bveak through the heavily barricaded doors and windows of premises at 0.3, Grey Avenue, last evening, a party of detectives, in charge of Detective-Sergeant McHugh, eventually had to obtain a ladder and climb to the roof, and then, by using axe and crowbar, make an opening, through which a detective lowered a rope and gained entry to the building. As a result of the raid nine Chinese were arrested, and appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court this morning. Fong Shee was charged with being the occupier and permitting the premises to be used for the smoking of opium. The following were charged with being found on the premises without lawful excuse: Ching Duk On (fruiterer), (iin Sing, Ah Fong, All Chee, Ah Lie. Ah Young (<rarcleners), and Ah Sew and Lee Min (laundiymen). On the application of Mr. J. F. Dickson, counsel for the accused, all were remanded for a. week. Bail was fixed in the case of Fong Shee at £75 and at £15 in respect of the others.
