Johnson (Otago) A GOOD SELECTION. CAREERS OF THE OARSMEN. Considerable interest has been aroused in Dominion rowing circles by the selection of the ten men who will journey to Canada to represent New Zealand in j the rowing races at the Empire Games, The main crew will be the eight-oar, but sufficient men are being taken to enable the Dominion to be represented m all the classes of rowing that are held. The ten men selected have all had considerable experience ill the sport and the majority wear the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association's red coat and cap, the emblem of tliie. Dominion championship honours. The selection can be regarded as a powerful one, advanced after only very great care and attention 011 the part of the selectors, Messrs. E. Innes, H. Ayres, A. M. Hale and A. D. Bayfield. The following sketches give a brief outline of the oarsmen's careers: — F. Brough (12st 81b), *Otago Rowing Club. —A very powerful oar, who never says die. Stroked the Otag& Club's crew that won the championship fours upon two occasions, 1926 and 192 T. The same crew journeyed to Melbourne for the Henley-on-Yarra regatta and won the fours, bringing back to the Dominion for the first time the Stewards' Grand Challenge Cup. ' Brough also stroked the Otago provincial eight that won the Hallyburton-Johnstone Cup in 1929 and 1930, and rowed second in 1928. B. Sandos (12st 21b), Hamilton Rowing Club, has enjoyed perhaps more wins during his career than any other man in the province. A member of the Hamilton Club's four that won the championship in 1924, he has in various events won the red coat and cap upon many occasions since. Regarded from the start a certainty for the crew. J. McDonald (13st 41b), Wairau Club, was a member of the Marlborough eight that rowed into second place last season, Well known in football circles as a member of the New Zealand Maori team that toured England in 192 G. V. 01 sen (Picton Club) was " three " in the club's champion four crew last year. Considered the most powerful oar in the boat. T. H. Thompson (Canterbury Rowing Club) is a maiden oar whose inclusion caused surprise at the time of the selection. Has satisfied the critics as a very strong oar. C. F. J. Gilbey (Canterbury Rowing Club) was not seen in Auckland! until the annual university race at Easter, 1 when he rowed in-ihe winning Canterbury crew. He is well built, sits a fine 1 seat, and rows a strong oar. C. E. Saunders (12st), Wairau Rowing 1 Club, won in championship pair crew in 1927. E. A. Waters (12st), Hamilton Rowing Club, is one of the most consistent oarsmen in the crew. Has rowed in all classes of races, and scored many wins. Gained his red coat in 1929. His omission in the first selection caused con- • siderable surprise, but a vacancy occurring gave liim his chance. A Ross, Auckland Rowing Club, started rowing in Hamilton. Since returning to the city joined the red and blacks, and has enjoyed a number of wins. Entered the junior division by winning at Tauranga last season. Tall, weighty, and ' always fit. The only member of an 1 Auckland city club to gain inclusion. G. B. Johnson (list 121b), Otago Row: 1 in<* Club, was six in the Otago crew that 1 won the Interprovincial Eights last year. Regarded in the South Island a strong ! oar. x '
