OBITUARY.

MR. CHARLES HESKETH. A former well-known business man of Auckland, Mr. Charles -Hesketh, died at Tauranga, on February 13, aged 88 years. Mr. Hesketh was born In Manchester, the second son of the late Mr. Emanuel Hesketh, who in the days was a schoolmaster in Auckland. Mr. Charles Hesketh arrived in Auckland with his ■parents in 1859 and after being a short time on a farm, joined Mr. Alfred Buckland, auctioneer, in whose service he remained for 20 years. In conjunction with the late Mr. Alexander Aitkin, Mr. Hesketh started a grain and produce business, which he carried on for many years. Mr. Hesketli saw active service during the first Taranaki War and also the one in the Waikato, and was the holder of the New Zealand medal. An ardent sportsman in his earlier years, Mr. Hesketh was particularly fond of cricket. He was a past master of Lodge Remuera, Freemason and a former meanber of the Auckland Licensing Bench and of the City Council, having represented, a ward from 1893 to 1900. He also served on the old Remuera Highway Board and the school committee. Mr. Hesketh was a brother of Mr. Samuel Hesketh, of the legal firm of Hesketli and Richmond. For many years past he had lived at Tauranga.
