MR. MAKITANARA ELECTED. RETURNING OFFICER'S DECISION. <By Teleeraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. Tho returning officer had to give his casting vote in the Southern Maori electorate when the official count of votes ccncluded to-dayv By tho preliminary count on the day of the election Tuiti Makitanara (United) was shown as leading E. T. Tirikatene, the Ratana party candidate, by one vote. At the official count today they were shown to have exactly the same number of votes. The return- : ing officer gave his casting vote for Mr. Makitanara, who is therefore elected. The official figures arc:— Tuiti Makitanara (U.) ... 19!) E. T. Terikatene (Ratana) 108 H. W.
