OBITUARY.

MR. WILLIAM McCULLOUGH. FARMER, MINER AND NEWSPAPER PROPRIETOR. , (By telegraph—Own Correspondent.) THAMES, tliis day. The death occurred this morning of Mr. William McCullough, former Legislative Councillor, and proprietor and editor of the "Thames Star" for over 30 years. He had been living in retirement for the past five years, and his end, though sudden, was not unexpected. Mr. McCullough was born at Wylam, near Ne\vcastle-on-Tyne, on February 26, 1843. Two years later he was taken by his parents to Limerick, Ireland, where he was reared. He came with his parents to Auckland in 1859 by the ship Tornado, Shortly after arriving, Mr. McCullough assisted his father on a farm at Mangapai, and at the same time was local correspondent for an Auckland paper. In 1864 he went to the West Coast goldflelds, and worked as a miner at the Greenstone claim, Red Jack Gully, and'nlso at other places on the Grey fields. When the Thames goldfield was opened in 1867 Mr. McCullough returned to Auckland and was soon trying his luck on the new El Dorado. llu worked for several years first as a miner and afterwards as mine manager. Later he joined the "Times" as mining reporter. A few years later Mr. McCullougli became proprietor of the "Thames Star," with which he has been (■minede<l for over half >i century.
