As there was a big field of fifty candidates the work of the deputy returning officers and their assistants was oneroDS, but the arrangements made by Mr. P. F. N'otley and his staff were adimiraMy thought out, and the electron went remarkably smoothly. Some idea of the of the task in thp eitv may be fathered from the fact that it was not until nearly four a-m. that the completed returns ■were in. To-day Mr. Xotley and his staff are making the official recount. The result of the contest in the city shows that the voters have practically put back the old council en bloc. Out of a total of twenty-one councillors Tequired, seventeen of the retiring council have been returned, in fact one may say eighteen, for Mr. E. H. Davis ts an old councillor. The new councillors aTe Uessrs. Hardley. Bennett, and 'Robertson. The most talked of feature this morning in town was the failure of the Labour ticket, and it is generally recognised that the running of a complete ticket of twenty-one Labour candidates was a mistake. There were many voters who while recognising that Labour should have fair representation on the council were averse to giving them support ■because they feared that fberr votes added to what was supposed ■would he a Labour b'.ock-vote would put m power a complete new council of Labour representatives. This effect of the Labour tactics is shown by the rejection of one of their retiring members, and the lower position of their other representatives. HartKjur Board and (Hospital Board elections for the contested seats also took phxce yesterday, and the net result in both is that they are practically back in office with the same members for another term. The Harbour Board only bos one new member, and the Hospital Board only two new members. It was noticeable at many of the «ity polling booths that cards with the various "tickets" were, freely circulated, and in some cases they were left in the polling booths by voters. This is stated to be a distinct breach of section 16 of the Locai Bodies Election and Polls Act Amendment Act, 1913, which reads:— "Every person is liable to a fine not exceeding £20, who, at in election (a) in any way interferes with an elector either in the polling 'booth or "while on his way thereto, with the intentions of influencing him or advising him as to his vote; or (b) prints or distributes or delivers to any person on the day of the poll or at any time during the three days immediately preceding the poll, anything 'being or purporting to be an imitation of any voting paper to be used at the poll, and having thereon the names of the candidates or any of them together with any directions or indications as to how any person should vote, or in any way containing such directions or indications or having thereon any matter likely to influence any vote." On the other hand, however, it is argued that none of the cards that were used were in any sense an imitation of a voting paper. AN OUTSTANDING RECOGNITION 1 ■ 1 AN APPRECIATION BY THE MAYOR, s < TLe gratifying result of the City Coun- •! oil elections, from the point of the eiti- < zens' endorsement of the policy and administrative work of the old council, was the subject of a statement by the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, this morning. "It is appropriate," said tfoe Mayor, "to express an opinion on the result of the elections from the standpoint of the administration of the last two years. It it felt that the return of seventeen of the old council out of nineteen who offered themselves for re-election, is a most emphatic endorsement of approval by the electors of the council's policy. If one looks carefully through the election returns of the -whole of the local authorities in the Auckland metropolitan area, including the northern polls, it will be seen that the Auckland City Council stands alone in the practical re-election of its councillors. In all other cases, without exception, there have been eirbetantial rejections of oouncillore, and the return of new men, in some instances to the extent of 75 per cent of the personnel of the council. The council, therefore, is quite justified in accepting, as it does, the overwhelming vote of yesterday as < an expression of complete confidence in < its administration. And it expresses to the electors, in recognition of this vote, '. an assurance of high appreciation. At • the same time, I am sure I speak for all councillors as I do for myself, when I say that it will be the earnest endeavour of the council throughout its current term of office during the next two years, to discharge faithfully the duties attaching to the civic administration, to transact the citizens' business efficiently, and to maintain generally and further the interests of the city "with devotion and dignity."

MOUNT EDEN. The keenness of the interest which was taken at Mount Eden in the fight between the "reform" platform and the present regime was evidenced by the heavy voting, the figures of the lowest candidate 'being well over the total of the highest candidate at the previous election. The Wellington municipal elections resolved themselves into a contest Official Labour versus citizens, with the result that Labour experienced a set back, its mayoral candidate being defeated by 6000. Of the full council ticket the only Labour survivors were Mr. FraseJ (m&mber for Wellington South) and Mr. Chapman (both former councillors), a net loss of two seats for Labour. In connection with the Harbour Board election, Colonel Mitchell (member for Wellington South) headed the poll, three business men being also elected, while Labour lost its former representative. The citizens' ticket heads the list in the Hospital Board election with three Labourites, and the following one is sure of election, but as the count is incomplete the remainder (who are former members) are in an uncertain position. Owing to the proportional representation system having been adopted in the ' City Council election it will be some time i before the final result is known. The quota was 820, and the nine first preference votes polling were: Sullivan (Lataou) M.P.), 1880; Agar (citizens' candidate), 1168; Rev. J. K. Archer (•α-bour), 990; Winton (Independent), 950; Fletcher (citizens), 963; Brunt (citizens), 841. Except Mr. Sullivan none of the old Labour members of the council secured the 'quota, and only one of them, Mr. Armj strong looks to have a chance of election. In tbe Harbour Board election the first preference leading candidates are Hoiland, Thacker, Sorenson, and Armstrong. In the Hospital Board election the first preference leading candidates are: Rev. Archer, Mrs. Herbert, and Dr. Fenwick. LABOUR TICKET DEFEATED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Wednesday. There were 26 candidates for the 12 seats on the City Council. Twelve comprised the citizens' ticket, seven Labour, I and the remainder were independent. The citizens' ticket, which consisted principally of members of the old council, was returned en bloc with a lead of over 1000 votes over the thirteenth man, who was a menrber of the old council, but an Independent.
