NEW MAORI MEMBER.
AN INDEPENDENT LIBERAL. GENERAL ELECTION TROSPECTS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. The successful candidate for the Southern Maori seat, Mr. J. 11. W. Uru, speaking at Tuahiwi last evening, thanked the electors for their support. He said he would enter the hoime as an independent Liberal, and he hoped this fact would not deter Sir James Carroll from extending the hand of friendship and assistance. Sir James Carroll predicted a general election in twelve months, and pleaded that Mr. Uru should associate himself with the Liberal party. To this course, however, both the new member and his supporters objected. Mr. Uru stated he had first to learn whether it was from the Reform, Liberal or Labour party that the Southern Maoris could expect the fairest treatment.
The final figures in the by-elpction for the Southern Maori electorate are: J. H. W. Uru, 242; Henare Parata, 223; T. M. Erihana, 159.
