LAWN TENNIS.

Tlie New Zealand team will play a representative match in Wellington on Saturday, September 3. and leave for Sydney the same evening. Tn the. All-English single championship, which was recently decided, F. L. Kiseley met Ritchie in the final, the winner qualifying to play the holder, H. L. Doherty, in the challenrt rou'id lUseley, with tremendous smashes at the net and tine placing strokes down the sides of the court, repeatedly killed, and won the match by three straight set.. When he met the holder. H. L. Doherty, a most engrossing contest took place. Doherty immediately settled down, and, by brilliant, service and placing down the side lines, took six out of t he seven •.Times. Riseley winning only the fourth. However, in ihe second, the latter showed better form, judicious placing, and the capital length that he kept, enabling him to get to 4-2. Doherty then came up band over hand, and, favoured by a little luck, made it. four all. Subsequently the set wa. called five all- but

then Riseley failed in his service, and, with Doherty playing a steady game, won at 7-5. The third was the finest of ull the sets. Kiseley. playing at quite the top of his form, took the first three, but Doherty, with an excellent service, gained three off the reel, and drew level. Four, five and six all were called in turn, bnt then Doherty. who stayed the better, wou the next two. and the match. Mr H. L. Doherty .is unable to come out to Australia this year, but Mr R. F. Doherty may do so; but this would be to some extent for the benefit of his health, and not with a view of making an extensive tour.
