SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The, New Zealand Championship Swimming Meeting, held under the auspices of the Auckland Swimming Club, Avas begun in the Albert-street Baths. on Saturday night, and avBI be concluded on Wednesday,. There was a large attendance, all the available space being occupied. The handicap events Avere Avell contested. G. A. Tyler easily accounted for the two championships, SAvimming splendidly. C. J. Sainty, who secured second place in both of these events, also sAvam Avell. Stroud, of Wellington, Avas not in his best form, and only succeeded in getting- third in the 220 yds championship. The water polo match was struck out, and instead an exhibition of life-saving drill was given by five young ladies. Mr R. W. St. Clair annnounced that he had just receiA'ed a telegram from Mr G. Hogben, Inspector-General of Schools, to. the effect that the. £100 A'oted by the Government Avas to be equally divided bet.veen Auckland and Canterbury, and that Auckland would receive £100 in trust for the encouragement of SAvimming in primary schools, payments to be made forthAvith. Mr St. Clair called for cheers for the Government, which were heartily given. All the officials carried out their duties well on Saturday, and the events were got off Avell to time.
