Southerners will have cause to remember for a long time the record put up by Auckland-owned horses at the C.J.C. Spring Meeting. Seahorse carried oft' the A T.Z. Cup and Explosion ran third, and Major George's colt also placed the C.J.C. Derby and Canterbury Cup to his credit in record time. Explosion landed the Metropolitan Handicap, and Miss Delaval the C.J.C. Oaks, while the two-year-old gelding Beddington, running in Mr L. D. Nathan's colours, only sustained a nose defeat at the hands of Eomanoff in the C.J.C Welcome Stakes.

The xVnckland Cup is already beingtalked, aboiiit. Mr Evett declares the weights on November 25th. The following is a list of the nominations: —

The Well ing-ton Park stallion St. Leger was the most successful sire at the A.E.C. Spring Meeting., for he claimed six winners. Castor, Seaton Delaval aud Cap-a-pie had three winners each.

Record Reign and Bellbird are being kept at Ellersiie for the A.U.G. Summer Meeting. They are both trained by Wm. Townshend. The last, named ran green in her races, running- out wide at the turns.. Record Reign has not A-et been tried over two miles, but he has the reputation of being a- good jumper. He stands 1(5.1 high.

A Carnage filly has performed successfully in Ireland, and another of. the same sex by that sire has won in England. Invective is the filly's name, and the race a two-year-old sellingplate at Newmarket. She was not fancied, her starting price being 100 to 8 in a field of 14.

Scintillant was showing good form prior to his Cesarewitch win.. At the Newmarket meeting in September lie carried 8.7, and won the Twenty-first Great Foal Stakes (1.1 mile) in a canter, and is credited with cutting out the distance in 2.0 4-5. which is a tall performance for a three-year-old.

The third' day of the Newmarket First October Meeting was marked by the Jockey Club Stakes, which proved to be the' gift for Flying Fox which it was always evident thai it would be when once* it became known that Cyllene's two efforts on the Ascot "going" had had their usual effect, and that we had seen the last of Mr Rose's really great horse on a racecourse (says an English writer). Which of these two would have won had both gone to the post at their best it is useless to' argue now; the fact remains that they both are exceptionally good horses, though looking at what Flying Fox has done with Scintillant since that once cowardly colt has mended his ways, and the fact that the latter was tried to be only some 211b behind C.yllene in tha Spring, it looks very much as if Flying Fox's victorious career would not have been checked even had the champion four-year-old been fit to take him on.

Mr Jas. Muir, of Wairangi, tells me his brood mare Dressmaker has this season produced a colt to the Musket horse Muskapeer. He is a chestnut with white face, and the dead image of his dam, who was brought down on Saturday last from Wairangi to Devonport to be mated with Cuirassier.

The Duke of Westminster has decided that Flying Fox shall not run again this year, and consequently the champion 'English three-year-old of the season has" gone into winter quarters. He has won in stakes £40,09 G.

The Victorian sportsman Mr H. Power will be able to look back at the year of 1809 with a good deal of satisfaction. A Sydney Cup with Diffidence and a V.B.C. Derby and Cup with Merriwee, all inside of 12 months, is indeed a full measure of luck.
