The English Derby.

The Derby was run on May 25 in the presence of the usual large crowd. Upwards of people were on the grounds and in fche neighbourhood at the time tho race was run. The Baron, who has been a hot favourite for several weeks, was beaten by Merry Hampton, who stood at 12 to 1 up to the closing hours of the betting. The result was a great surprise, although many bettors had received a tip for Merry Hampton. The Savage Club backed nearly to a man Merry Hampton. The day was cloudy, cold and raw. Enough rain had fallen during the night to lay the dust, so there were no great dust clouds following the t.ain or vehicles going and coming.

Vast crowds left London for Epsom Downs to witness the great race. Four-in-hands were seen in :great numbers. Ten of these turnouts left the metropolis alono. The Prince of Wales, Lord Roseberry, the Crown Prince of Denmark, and many other persons of distinction were present. The course was slightly heavy. The Baron was the favourite in the betting. Merry Hampton was ridden by Wabts, The Baron by Cannon, and Marbley by F , . Barrett. The last betting was 11 to 1 against Merry Hampton, 5 to 4 against The Baron ; 10 to 1 against Martley, 7 to 1 against Eridspord, 12 to 1 against Aintree, 22 to 1 against Blanchland, 50 to 1 against Grandison, 50 to 1 against Porcelain, 100 to 1 against Saville, 200 to 1 against Consolide, 220 to 1 against the Shannon colt. A capital start was made. Porcelain and the Shannon colt first snowed in the advance, with Aintree and Eridspord following, and The Baron and Merry Hampton coming next. . Porcelain soon dropped back, but the Shannon colt kept the lead. Hartley wae last. At the mile post Eridspord drew up, and ran level with the Shannon colt, and he was joined directly after by Blanchland, Grandison, and The Baron. The pace was too hot for the Shannon colt, and he gave way. Aintree was now at the tail of the string, and Blanchland and Eridspord were three lengths ahead of The Baron and Merry Hampton on entering the straight. Canon rode The Baron vigorously, and Blanchland and Eridspord very soon fell back beaten. Merry Hampton then took the lead with Martley and Aintree heading the others. The Baron ran with gameness, but failed to Teach Merry Hampton, who won by four lengths. Aintree finished fourth, and Eridspord fifth. Shannon colt came in last. There were eleven starters.
