SUICIDES.
A labourer named Honry Scott, residing atChristehurch.cut his throat on August 2a becauso lie was about to be arrested for failing to snpport his family. Ho is in a dangerous state.
A sad suioido is reported from Oamaru, Mrs Philip Mason having out her throat while in a state of mental aberration. The poor woman died in a few minutes after committing the act.
Bridget Healey, aged 35 years, and employed as domestic servant, on Sept. 1 entered Catholic Church at Timaru, and swallowed a quantity of ammonia. The church was empty, but hor cries attracted attention. She was taken to tho Hospital, and the poison removed by the stomach pump. The woman now lies in a critical state. It is supposed she is insane. Robert McLaehlan, engine-driver, Napier, cut his throat on August 30, but tho wound was not fatal. The neighbours, who wore alarmed by his family, sent for medical assistance, and throe doctors arrived at the scene and sewed the man's throat up. He was conveyed to the Hospital, where ho now lies in a precarious condition. In his pocket a paper was found on which was written an appeal to tho benevolent to care for his children, and stating that he was driven to commit the deed by life being rendered miserable by the conduct of his wife.
A man named Thomas Hutson Mackrill was found dead in bod at the Coffee Palace, Dunedin, on the 25th August, at 5.30 p.m. He was in his night-shirt, under the (bedclothes, had a revolver firmly clasped in his right hand, and he was shot through the mouth. Ho had been dead, it is conjectured, for at least fourteen hours. At the inquest yesterday it was elicited that deceased had about £200 in his possession, and as only £10 could be found, it is a mystery where the other money has gone. The police, from the inquiries they have made, cannot find that he could possibly have spent it in drink or debauchery. A verdict of " Suicide whilst in a state of temporary insanity, induced by excessive drinking," was returned. The coroner said the police would no doubt make further inquiries.
The half-yearly examination of candidates for admission as barristers, and solicitors in the colony takes place at Christchurch on 15th September. Forty-eight students have entered, of whom five are from Christchurch, eight from Wellington, sis: from Gisborno, three from Invereargill, twelve from Auckland, and fourteen from Dunedin. In addition to the above, nine barristers and solicitors are applying for admission to the New Zealand Courts,
