Tlio declaration of tho poll for Mow ton took placo in the Ponaonby Hall this afternoon, and passed off very quietly. Mr Hulme presided, and announced the polling as already recorded by üb, viz. :— Peacock. Do Lautour. Fonsonby Hall ... 554 448 ■yVhau 59 zl Newton West ... H9 _139 Total "732 COS Majority for Mr Peacock—l2l. Ho therefore declared Mr Peacock duly elected. . Mr Peacock then said : It is now my pleasant duty to express my hearty thanks to the electors who have honoured me with their confidence and placed me in the position of representative of New/on. The battle ha3 been fought, and as was said by Mr DoLautour at the beginning we could not both win it. I think it will be admitted that the contest has been carried out in an orderly way and without acrimony or bitterness of feeling, but should there exist any such feeling I am sure it is the wish of us all that it should die out and be forgotten. I assure the electors as a body that so far as lam concerned I shall not consider whether an elector has opposed me or not, but will endeavour to be serviceable to all, giving to each man a courteous hearing, and honestly trying to give effect to the wishes of my constituents. I may be allowed to emphasize a remark which I previously made, that I shall be glad if the working men of Newton will recognise in me one of themselves. One who is thentrue friend, and who, without attemptingto impose on them by mere flattery and empty professions of solicitude for their welfare, will carefully guard their interests and seek in their prosperity a true basis for the Bteady progress and advancement ot the country: Again I thank you sincerely for the honour you have conferred upon me. A similar acknowledgment of thanks was made on behalf of Mr DoLautour, and the usual compliment was paid to tho Returning Officer.
