When the Empire of Prance was at the height of its popularity, and Paris outshone all the capitals of the world, Napoleon 111. cenceived the idea of founding an international race for three-year-olds, which should completely eclipse the great English contests. To do thin all that seemed necessary was to make the eveut the richest stake in Europe, and it was therefore arranged that to the ordinary sweep of -lOsovs. each a sum of 100,000 franc i (£4,000) should be added. The first race came to an issue iv lS(i_, aud, to the chagrin of the Parisians, was won by an English horse, The Ranger, who, ridden by James Goater, defeated La Toucques, Saccharometer, aud niue others. Next anniversary, however, the French were well recompensed for their previous reverse by tiie success of Vermont, who, to the astonishment of all concerned, beat tiie peerless Blair Athol easily. Since then French and English horses have secured victory almost alternately. The quality of the ;field, however, seldom comes up to that of the Derby or Legcr. Many owners do not ]care to lisk sending their horses acro-s tbe " silver streak," whilst others object to racing on Sunday.

The engagements of Robert the Devil iuclude the Midsummer Stakes at Newmarket, tho Sussex Stakes at Goodwood, the Doncaster St. Leger, the great Foal Stakes, ami the Champion Stakes at the second October meeting.

The name of thesecond horse in the Grand Priiie is cabled as "Lesteur," but there being no three-year-old of that name engaged wo are forced to the conclusion that it refers cither to Count Lcgrange's "Le Facteur," by Boiard out of Ma Foiie, or to Baron Rothschild's "Louis DOr," a colt who carried off nearly all the principal two-year-old events in Franco last year. The latter hypothesis seems the most probable as Louis DOr would bo sure to be a daugcrous competitor.

Milan belongs to Count Lagrange and was bred at Chamant As a two-year-old he ran twice iv England, but could not score a victory. His best performance was in tho Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood, when he ran third to Brotherhood and Pappoose. Milau started second favourite for the Dewhurst Plate won by Grace Cup.

When the English Mail left England, Mr Ellerton's Brotherhood was favourite for the Two Thousand Guineas, at 4to 1. M. Le Fevre's Bcauininet, tho winner of the French Biennial, and the Duke of Westminster's Muucaster being next iv demand. Pe-rouel's price was 100 to S, several bets of 1,000 to 60 having been previously accepted for the stable. " Vigilant" in the "Sportsman" says, "Petronel is being backed iv a quiet way, and will probably beat a good many of the more fancied OUC3."
