Sporting Notes.

The steeplechase meeting on the 11th Oi:t >ber promises to be the most successful gathering ever hold by the limit Club. The members have determined to make it a success, and arc preparing their horses in right quod earnest, and I have little hesitation in saying that larger fields than those on Saturday over hurdles and across country have never yet been seen in Auckland. At the Greyhound Yard, Mr James Smith has Greyhound, Uobin Hood, Isleman, and that little wouder, Louis, in work. Mathews has The General and Sbaughran, whilst at their owners and other places Dou Juan, Butcher Boy, Magician, Rocket, Tear-a-Way, Fau«k-a Ballagh, Jonathan Wild, Lady Godiva, and some eight or ten others are doing steady work. The entries close on Friday next at the office of the Racing Club by 4 p.m.

The Wellington Jockey Club contemplate having a two days' meeting during the time Parliament is bittiug. I think the idea a good one, providing a flay is fixed not to clash with either of the Southern meetings, and if a good programme is drawn up is bouuu to be a success. I cannot see why the Club contemplate reducing the stakes at the annual meeting, as their big nice (the Cup) seldom costs them much, and the others are all small events in comparison.

For tlic Auckland Summer Meeting horses aie now being got up and doing gentle exercise. I hear Yatapa is looking Al, and his owner is satislied he can win the Cup if at all leniently treated.

The Puncdin Jockey Club have endorsed the steps taken by the Auckland Racing Club in removing the disqualification from Owen Cnrran McGee.

On the Christchurch Metropolitan Meeting there is very little betting at present. A few Cup and Derby doubles have been taken. Fishhook and Betrayer is the favorite double. Laertes has been backed to win the Christchurch Jockey Club Cup, £1,000 to £50 having been taken. By telegram we learn Sweatmeat, carrying 7st 121bs, won the Wagga Wagga Cup, beating Secundus, 83t 4lbs second. In the Metropolitan they each, carried 7st 4lbs, which Secundus won easily. In the Melbourne Cup the latter will be receiving 91bs from Swcatmeat, when I should imagine he will be able to turn the tables upon Sweatmeat.

The English Derby just run and won by Sir Bevys is the one-hundredth, it having been established iv the year 17S0, when it was won by Sir Charles Buubury's eh c Diomed, and was then run over a distance of one mile. The Oaks was established one year earlier, and the distance, one mile and a halt, has never been altered.

I notice by latest files the Cobham Stud Company, in England, is in liquidation, and that the whole of the horses, comprising such stallion celebrities as Blair Athol, Wild Oats and Caterer, are for absolute sale, with about 100 brood marea and 50 foals. Owners of horses engaged in the Canterbury Jockey Club Handicap are reminded that acceptances must be sent iv by the Ist October. Nimrod.'
