There is no doubt that a number of the natives were shot. The cause of this access of fury in tribe .against tribe was the taking pf a young woman by a brother of the chief" of the opposing tribe. The white residents in the neighbourhood, some ten or twelve, came up to the Bourail arid Noumea more as a measure of precaution than anytning else. Wednesday, 10th.

The troops, after destroying a village, were; upon their return to camp, attacked by about 250 to 300 natives at Boularpari. Awaiting for a place sufficiently open to afford a chance of seeing the savages, the troops kept on; then suddenly turned round, and fifteen of the blacks bit the dust. How many more were wounded is unknown, for 'twas late, and the tawny wretches disappeared in the thick scrub as though by magic. To-morrow much is hoped for from an expedition to be made against the insurgents by the Canala tribes, assisted by the soldiers.

Thursday, 11th. Everything remains quiet in all parts of the island except the scene of the revolt; and their operations are circumscribed to a very small area. The attack organised yesterday resulted in,the destruction of the villages only; the natives fleeing amongst the mountains. Many people express surprise that more is not yet achieved against the insurgents. Not so those who come from the scene of action, and such as are well-acquainted -with the country and its black population. These, better informed, know perfectly well that the tedious process of starvation, and'of black against black, are the" rrieans which- must be depended upon for the reduction {of this handful of agile devils who leap from rock to rock, dive into the friendly covering of thick tangled bush by paths known to themselves only, or disappear in the numerous ravines worn in the mbutaic sides by the rains of ages. Come to their fate they eventually must, but in the meantime they cannot be dealt with iri any but the one fashion. .The result of the subscription in the town in aid of the suffiererc by the revolt was published to-day in the" " Nouvelle Caledonie_" , -It amounts to within a trifle of 10,000 francs (£400). Up to the latest moment the number of known victims in the late revolt is 118. It is not"supposed there will be any more to add, or at most but one or two, who in such a moment may be iFissed. 9 a.m. 15th. I open my letter to add the information, just received, that yesterday an ambuscade succeeded against the revolted tribes, killed the son of the chief, and several others of .he wretches. They have also burnt and destroyed in the last day or two twenty more villages. Yesterday some natives, bearing the tricolour flag, came in and offered their services to the Government at the camp at Boularpari. The begin ning of the end is in view. • ARRIVAL OF THE SAPPHIRE.
