The Belgian Government have been able during the°past year to redeem two million francs of the capital embarked in working the State railway. An important experiment has been tried with Whitwerth's new steel armour plating. A Palliser 250-ib. shell was fired against a target composed of steel, at a distance of 30 yards. The projectile wouid have penetrated twelve inches ordinary iron armour. It was almost powerless against steel only four and a-half inches thick, and broke up into innumerable fragments, leaving the target virtually unimpaired. An excursion steamer, the Empress _of India, on Lake Ontario, went broadside over the Falls, and eighteen persons perished. During a fog, the Guion, mail steamer from New York to Liverpool, went ashore and foundered near the Coning by lightship on the Irish coast. All the passengers and crew were saved.
