The Waimate Daily Advertiser began life as the Waimate Advertiser, a four-page weekly publication, on 28 May 1898. Editorially it aimed to be politically independent and described itself as taking an active interest in the social affairs of Waimate (in South Canterbury) and the surrounding district. The paper started publishing daily in 1914 and changed its name to the Waimate Daily Advertiser in 1916. The Waimate Advertiser continues to be published today, although it is now more a community newspaper.
